The development of Michif Lessons was undertaken by the Gabriel Dumont Institute, with the app created collaboratively by Media Access and Production (eMAP) at the University of Saskatchewan.

Michif is an endangered language with an oral tradition, spoken primarily by Métis communities. Estimates suggest that only about 5-10% of the Métis population are fluent speakers, predominantly among elders. The Gabriel Dumont Institute is committed to promoting and preserving Métis culture through resource development that facilitates hearing and reading the language. Due to the oral nature of Michif-Cree and the absence of a standardized orthography, the Institute adheres to spelling conventions established by expert linguists such as Norman Fleury.
